Hi, I’m Stephanie and welcome to VOX Talk! This week, I have Julie Williams and Adam Fox here with me in the VOX Talk Studio. Are you ready to hear some news?

The Loop:

Southern California Wildfires

Our top story is about the devastating wildfires in Southern California this week. Several voice actors in our community were affected and were either evacuated or are still on standby. To learn more about how your fellow voice actors are coping, go to voice-overs.com/forum/ to read an updated thread about the wildfires. Now, if you are from San Diego County or other areas threatened by the wildfires, please go to the Voice-overs.com forum and let everyone know that you are okay if you haven’t yet touched base.

Jeff Gelder Holiday Magic

In voice over news, voice actor Jeff Gelder of GelderHead Productions is looking for voice talent to participate with him on a project called "Holiday Magic 2007… a gift for children of all ages," a CD featuring music and a holiday tale that will be distributed to sick children at Children's Hospital San Diego and their siblings. Last year, Jeff produced the first Holiday Magic CD and distributed 1500 CDs to four hospitals. Financial donations are also being accepted to help cover the costs of production. A donation of just $2 will put a CD in the hand of one hospitalized child this Christmas. For those who would like to get involved in the project or donate, contact Jeff at jeff at gelderhead.com

Teletoon turns 10

To wrap up the news, Teletoon, a broadcast television station airing cartoons, has just turned 10, growing up with their aging audience. To celebrate, Teletoon recently re-branded their image to keep kids, teens and adult viewers engaged with animation when they want it, and where they want it, in an increasingly digital age. The specialty network is also directly targeting babyboomers with the newly launched Teletoon Retro hour nightly at 7:30 p.m., featuring classic cartoons including The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show, The Flintstones, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids and The Jetsons. Hey, this is where residuals come in handy, eh?

To learn more about Teletoon, you can visit their website, Teletoon.com

The Biz:

Salutation:

Hi, I’m Stephanie and welcome to VOX Talk! This week, you’ll hear from correspondents Bob Green and Adam Fox. Let’s get this episode started with some news.

The Loop:

Blue Microphone Joe and Snowpack

In tech news, Mix Magazine reports that Blue Microphones introduced Joe ($499), a large diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone and Snowpack ($199), a USB product bundle at the 123rd AES Convention in New York City.

Joe is targeted at project studios and designed to capture a variety of sound sources, such as vocals, acoustic instruments, drums and more. The Snowpack bundle comprises of the Snowball USB microphone with a pair of USB headphones and Mackie Tracktion 3 software for a portable USB-powered studio for music and podcasting on the Mac or PC.

Blue Microphones states that the Snowpack will be available November 1, 2007 and expects to ship Joe on January 1, 2008.
Want to see it for yourself? Go to mixonline.com or visit Blue Microphones’ website, bluemic.com.

Transformers HD-DVD Presentation and Luncheon with Peter Cullen

Onto our next story, Paramount unveiled their signature HD-DVD release, featuring the Transformers, their HD-DVD title of the year. Those present also lunched with Optimus Prime himself, Peter Cullen. All those in attendance were given an Optimus Prime movie toy helmet along with the HD-DVD set for the Transformers movie, and an official movie poster.

To read the complete article and also an interview with Peter Cullen, go to 411mania.com or visit the VOX Talk show notes for the direct link.

Niche Game Import Bidding War

In closing, http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2007/10/the_rise_of_the_niche_game.php

Been to the gaming aisle at the local department store lately? The $50 video games you see at the store have quite the story to tell both travel and cost wise. Here’s a neat fact for you: Did you know that it can cost a million dollars to localize and record voice overs for video games that have a 50,000 piece production run? That’s the truth when it comes to importing video games and having to make the content accessible to a different market and to their native speakers.

To read more about niche game import bidding wars and find the direct link, visit the show notes for Episode 46 of VOX Talk.

The Biz:

Today in The Biz, Bob Green shares his thoughts on something I’m sure that you can all relate to.

Bob, it is incredible that you didn’t hear back on that one! How many of you winced at the end of that piece? I know I did. Thanks for sharing Bob and I hope you receive a thank you sometime soon!

Salutation:

Greetings, I’m Stephanie and welcome to VOX Talk! This week, Kristi Stewart, Adam Fox, and Vicki Amorose join us on the program. Let’s get started with some news.

The Loop:

Say How? A Pronunciation Guide for Public Figures

In voice over news, you’ll want to get your hands on this resource! Nancy Wolfson of BraintracksAudio.com recently referred me to an online pronunciation guide perfect for voice actors who need to pronounce the names of those in the public eye.

I caught up with Ray Hagen, the person who compiled this guide who also happens to be a voice actor who used to record audio books for the Library of Congress Blind Recording Studio. Originally, this collection started out on index cards filed away but now with over 9,000 names to its credit, it was too good to keep in the filing cabinet and is now available for all to use.

Want to see it for yourself? Check out the article on VOX Daily or go to the VOX Talk show notes to get the Library of Congress link.

Rodney Saulsberry’s Commercial Intensive Teleclass

Onto our next story, Rodney Saulsberry is closing out 2007 with an educational bang, offering a 3 week Commercial Intensive Teleclass chock full of everything you need to know to be successful in the commercial end of the voiceover industry. As Rodney says, this is the genre where many of you will work the most and it's imperative to be aware of the latest trends and business matters in this most competitive area of the field.

The Teleclass Meets for Three Weeks on Thursdays starting on November 29 thru December 13, 2007 at 8-9 p.m. Eastern Time / 5-6 p.m. Pacific Time

To learn more about the class and register, go to RodneySaulsberry.com or head to the VOX Talk show notes for the direct link to the class.

Interview on NPR about Video Game Voice Acting Rates

In closing, there was an interview October 11th, 2007 on NPR (National Public Radio) in the United States hosted by Nate DiMeo featuring an interview about pay for voice actors in video games, the argument being that if blockbuster video games are earning hundreds of millions of dollars, union actors who provide voices for the characters should get a bigger share of the profits, perhaps even residuals, just as their colleagues in television get when their shows enjoy re-runs.

To hear the 3-minute interview, go to the NPR website or visit the VOX Daily blog for details and to add a comment on the debate.

The Biz:

Today in The Biz, Kristi Stewart shares her story on transitioning from broadcast to voice over!

Thank you Kristi! If you enjoyed Kristi’s segment, I want to encourage you to send her an email at her website http://okkid.voices.com.

Tech Talk:

Now, Adam Fox!

Adam, you’re so knowledgeable! I’d like to take minute to let you know how much we appreciate hearing from you each week and thank you on behalf of our VOX Talk audience for being so approachable and personal ☺ Now, the floor is yours: Do you have anything to add? Send Adam your feedback and podmail to Adam@DefiantDigital.com ☺

VoxBox:

Now, take a deep breath! Ah, feels good, doesn’t it? Vicki Amorose joins us in the VOX Box with some tips on how to stop and smell the roses.

Wonderful ideas Vicki! Thank you for sharing! If you have anything you’d like to share in the VOX Box, send your MP3 to me via email to Stephanie@voices.com.
