News

British Animation Awards

Our top story is about the British Animation Awards’ new category, Best Character Voice Performance. If your voice has starred in a British animated film in the past two years, you qualify to be nominated for this brand new category. Two other categories added this year include New Media: Best Animation and New Media: Best Commissioned Animation, focusing on Internet and downloadable animation.

Update on Writers Guild of America Strike

Tired of Leno and Letterman re-runs yet? With most primetime programming still being fueled by scripts tucked away from before November, the Writers Guild of America is now in its second week of striking and stockpiles of scripts are starting to run out. Primarily, the strike is over new media and how work created initially for television is now being used as promotional material on the Internet and mobisodes on cellular phones without payment being made to the writers who wrote the scripts.

Read about both sides of this argument on the VOX Daily blog and have your say. Featured are viewpoints from writers on the picket lines as well as those who oppose the strike.

Meet the Voice of Professional Golf

To conclude, I’d like to draw your attention to an interview that was recently published featuring David Cook, a professional announcer who has provided live announcing services for professional golf including the PGA Tour, the LPGA Tour and also the PGA’s Champions Tour.

To read the interview in full and see a neat picture of David with Tiger Woods, go to VOX Daily or visit the link in the show notes.

Adam Fox

Hi, I’m Stephanie and welcome to VOX Talk! Today, we have a special guest in The Biz, we’ll hear from Tech Talk correspondent Adam Fox and send out a request for feedback. First, let’s move on to the news.

The Loop:

Writers’ Strike in Progress in Tinsel Town

Our lead story is one that should send shivers up your spine if you’re a member of the union. In the US, writers in Hollywood are striking over how their work is used in new media, specifically on DVDs and through mobisodes on cellphones and webisodes on the Internet. The Writers Guild of America is up against Hollywood producers and broadcast networks and it’s a wonder which party will flinch first. Their contract with the producers expired last Wednesday at midnight. How will this affect voice actors? Find out on the VOX Daily blog at blogs.voices.com/voxdaily/

Simpsons Video Game Released

In voice over news, your favorite Simpsons characters are back in a video game release from Electronic Arts this Tuesday featuring none other than the original voice actors from the acclaimed television series. Reuters reports that the game has an episodic feel and has 8,000 lines to its credit, enough to script an entire season of The Simpsons on the air! To learn more about the Simpsons video game, go to Reuters.com via the link from the VOX Talk show notes.

Naruto : Rise of a Ninja

To wrap up the news, the video games Naruto : Rise of a Ninja, is reportedly giving gamers the opportunity to pick the language that they hear the voice overs in to suit their fancy. With the aid of a software add on for the game available online, gamers can choose between the original Japanese voice actors and the North American voice actors. Kind of a like a voice over version of the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books, eh?
